Among all human fears, speaking in public is one of the greatest. Most of us are at least a little apprehensive about standing up and speaking in front of even a small group of trusted friends. Yet, those who can speak well in public enjoy more success in business than those who cannot. Consider this. Suppose you are part of a workplace team given the task to pull together a plan for the organization, perhaps a marketing strategy. The study done, someone must report the findings. Whom will the b… Continue

There have been a lot of clamor for new ways in psychiatry and treatment of mental health patients, particularly those that tend to manifest only mild symptoms such as Multiple Personal Disorder and schizoprenia.
There are several scientifically based essays that has been published regarding new age treatments of these common but debilitating conditions. Here is a particular video that I would like to share.

These past couple of weeks have been very busy! Kate Anthony and Stephen Goss presented in Amsterdam at the E-Mental Health Summit on the ethics of online therapy. They discussed the BACP ethical guidelines for online counselling and supervision as well as OTI's Ethical Framework for the use of Technology in Mental Health. Kate and I also presented a… Continue
You're in a video chat session with a new client and the discussion becomes extremely confusing. After revealing a history replete with abuse and neglect in her early years, the client's physicality changes, her voice changes and she begins talking about herself in the third person, ridiculing herself and saying, "Alice is such a wimp! It's a good thing she has me to take over when she can't handle life anymore!" A few more shifts and you begin to wonder, does this client have Dissociative Ident… Continue
I'm an artist and an author. Most of my writing has been done in tandem with the art I've made. I've experienced emotional freedom through writing and creating and I want to encourage others to give it a try themselves. People hold back on using these forms of expression because somehow they've gotten the idea that it's not enough if what they make helps them. They feel it has to be "good" to be worthwhile. My training and life experience begs to differ; it's about the process NOT the product.… Continue
I just joined this social network today and it's like diving into Alice In Wonderland's rabbit hole! Love it. It's a magical place!
I received my DCC in June of this year and have been percolating on how to put it to best use. After reading this thread, I'm happy to say that my growing inclinations are largely reinforced by what I've read here. I looked into some of the e-therapy sites and wasn't comfortable with being jointly presented to the public with astrologers, psychics and the like.
I… Continue
That's the title of a panel I'll be moderating next week at Bouchercon, the huge annual convention of mystery fans, held this year in Indianapolis. Only the panel title puts Murder first!
In my "other hat," I'm a mystery writer, and my new book, DEATH WILL HELP YOU LEAVE HIM, will be in stores the day after Columbus Day. It's the second in my series featuring recovering alcoholic Bruce Kohler. The first was DEATH WILL GET YOU SOBER. I've used my 25 years experience as a clinical social worker a… Continue

I had a conversation with a fellow counselor that I met while working with an "advising site" offering everything from psychic readings to distance therapy. My friend -- who continues to work with the site -- and I traded observations about the clients that seem to be drawn to those kinds of sites and wondered if clients on a more traditionally focused counseling/therapy site would be similar.
We noticed that the typical "advising" site clients were more likely to be clock watchers. These sites… Continue
Today I finished out the three day of the CESL conference. I appreciate so much how technology provides a simple and convenient way to connect to others we might no otherwise have the opportunity to network with. My avatar “Tymeless Sands” enjoyed the opportunity to be informed on recent research, counseling and teaching methodology, without the hassle of travel, hotels or organizing my family to accommodate my absence for three days. Bravo to Dr. Marty Jencius and Debra London for being… Continue
O.K. It's been a few months now since I completed the Distance Credentialed Counselor (DCC) training seminar, and I'm still not off the ground from a private practice standpoint. The biggest hangup has been finding a web address that 1) hasn't been used, 2) is easily memorable, and 3) I like. My criteria has perhaps been part of the problem.
Succinct - I don't want some sentence like "Your Changed Life" that, when converted into an address, looks like a bunch of unconnected characters.… Continue
DeeAnna Merz Nagel of OTI was interviewed in an article about a new online counseling service for US military services personnel in Stars and Stripes, which describes itself as 'the independent news source for the US military community'.
DeeAnna makes some sensible recommendations, like accessing services from the security and privacy of home, and is quoted several times. OTI itself is cited too.
While the organisers of the new service, known as TRIAP (Tricare Assistance Program), seem to have… Continue
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/6062089/Depressed-people-should-get-online-counselling-study-says.html
People suffering from depression should get counselling online to avoid long waiting times to see a doctor, according to new research.
A study of almost 300 patients found that those given cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) were two-and-a-half times more likely to recover from their mental health problems that those who received standard care from a GP.
One in six adults suffer… Continue
I need to get better at adding to my blog. I've not yet managed to multitask like a Gen-Xer.
Today, I'm pretty excited. I send out a survey to our students asking those who had received counseling to rate their experience. One of the questions related to what resources students found valuable. Although I did not have a fantastic return on the survey, it was very positive and 25% of respondents specifically identified distance counseling as a resources that they found helpful.
My personal exper… Continue
This is to announce that this symposium (above) has now been published and is available online. It grew out of a special event organised by Derek Richards and his colleagues at Trinity College Dublin funded by the European Science Foundation that brought together a range of leading experts working at the cutting edge of the field. The event itself has had a lasting impact and included papers on a wide range of technologies and this special edition of the British Journal of Guidance and Counselli… Continue
Spent some time with a good friend yesterday and we spent time thinking about depth in relationship. I surprised myself as I found myself leaning much more toward the idea of contact, and seeing this in binary form, either as on or off.
This is a concept I was introduced to by Keith Tudor during the online conversation we had in June that will hopefully be posted to www.onlinevents.co.uk shortly.
I do like to experience "depth" in my relationships and have noticed at times chasing this to the… Continue

Watching Hulu right now - long story involving the fact that someone in this family thought we ought not pay for cable/satellite any longer when we can download shows on hulu or netflix for a fraction of the cost.

In the fall of 1991 I was an undergraduate student at Georgia State University. I was a student in the health sciences department and I majored in Mental Health and Human Services. To be sure all students received hands-on experience, we were required to complete 3 practicums. And so, approaching time to register for my [...]

I recently was introduced to an awesome website that I thought I would share with everyone. The name of the site is the Kristin Helms Internet Safety Foundation and the website is http://www.kristinhelmsfoundation.org/.

I recently had a conversation with a colleague who said she just couldn’t find her “calling.” She is a counselor and she knows she was led to help people but she feels she is called to deeply fulfill her vocation- she just doesn’t know what or how. She told me about her jobs [...]
I have relocated my counseling and psychotherapy practice to 25 Memorial Parkway (Hwy 36) in Atlantic Highlands. My new location is just a few miles from my previous location in Rumson and all other contact information remains the same.
