What is online therapy? How can this be done ethically?
What could online therapy mean for my practice?
This full-day training course will discuss best practice with regard to counseling and communicating
online with potential and existing clients, business associates, friends and other therapists. With the
advent of Web 2.0 and Social Media, counselors and psychotherapists must now understand the
boundaries of working and socializing in cyberspace. Topics to be covered include communicating
confidentially with existing clients, how to handle the email inquiry from a potential client, the basics
of ethical online counseling and the slippery slope of marketing your practice on the internet via
social networking sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter.

Presenter Biography:
DeeAnna Merz Nagel, LPC, DCC is a psychotherapist, consultant and international expert regarding
online counseling and the impact of technology on mental health. She specializes in textbased
counseling and supervision via chat and email. DeeAnna’s expertise extends to assisting
individuals and families in understanding the impact of technology in their lives from normalizing the
use of technology and social media to overcoming internet and cybersex addictions. Her
presentations and publications include ethical considerations for the mental health practitioner with
regard to online counseling, social networking, mixed reality and virtual world environments.
DeeAnna is a former President of the International Society for Mental Health Online and co-founder
of the Online Therapy Institute. She maintains a face-to-face private practice in Atlantic Highlands, NJ.
